Firewall info

Some features of Train Noise Expert require access to an external server. Firewall settings need to accommodate this and are detailed in this section. Please contact us in the first instance if you have any connection issues.

Firewalls prevent undesired internet traffic to/from your computer, and can block communication required for some features of Train Noise Expert.

The settings shown here are for Windows Firewall, but should be applicable to other firewall systems. Please liaise with your IT department to make changes to the firewall settings.

Windows Defender Firewall

  • Open the Windows Defender Firewall settings.
  • In the left panel, choose “Allow an app of feature through Windows Defender Firewall”.
  • Choose “Allow another app…”.
  • Browse to and select “C:\Program Files\University of Southampton\Train Noise Expert\Train Noise Expert.exe”. (This path may be slightly different depending on your computer setup and language settings.)
  • Under “Network types…” select “Private”.
  • Click “Add”.

This should allow Train Noise Expert to communicate through your local firewall.

If connection errors persist, then it is likely that a communication port is still being blocked by a firewall. In this case, you will need to ensure that the outgoing TCP port 3306 is allowed. You may need to speak to your systems administrator to enable this.
